6th Grade: Map-Making with Play Clay

Sixth graders experienced a recurring favorite of students in Ms. Sinclair's design class!

Using play clay, they explored the history of mapmaking, built model mountains, then mapped the terrain -- with profile views, hachures, and contour lines. Along the way they also examined historical maps that use the same methods they just learned how to do themselves.

What a fun, hands-on STEM activity to bring together elements of design, history, geography, geology, inquiry, and math!
