Summer Programs

FAIS offers multiple enriching and fun summer experiences for all ages (2½ - 14) from early July through late August. Summer Programs registration for 2019 is now open!

FAIS Summer Programs complement the School’s curriculum and mission, with instruction in both French and English. Camp teachers make great use of our beautiful campus, which includes a nature trail and outdoor classrooms, Discovery Park, two art studios, a music room, and two computer laboratories. Your children will learn new skills, have unusual adventures, and bond with one another. As in the past, our theme-based camps combine hands-on activities, singing, sports, art, and music, science, computer programming, theater, and more. Our wide range of activities, matched with our international curriculum and grounds, are sure to spark an interest in your child. There is truly something for everyone.

FAIS Summer Camp complements the School’s curriculum and mission, with instruction in both French and English, unless otherwise noted. Camp teachers make great use of our beautiful campus, which includes a nature trail and outdoor classrooms, Discovery Park, two art studios, a music room, and two computer laboratories. Your children will learn new skills, have unusual adventures, and bond with one another. Our theme-based camps combine hands-on activities, singing, sports, art, and music, science, computer programming, theater, and more. Our wide range of activities, matched with our international curriculum and grounds, are sure to spark an interest in your child. There is truly something for everyone.

Check-in
All campers and their parents/guardians must check in at the beginning of the first day of camp in the Summer Camp Office. Check-in opens at 8:00 a.m. If your child is attending morning care, please check-in prior to dropping them off.

Camp Hours
Regular camp hours are 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Before-camp care is complimentary beginning at 8:00 a.m.. Instructors will pick up their campers and accompany them to the camp location at 8:45 a.m. At the end of the day, parents may come to the classrooms to pick up their children starting at 3:15 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., all campers will be accompanied to aftercare. Aftercare is available until 5:00 p.m. at a drop-in rate of $11/hour, billed by the minute. Families will be billed $1/minute for any campers remaining after 5:00 p.m. Be sure to sign your child in and out with the adult on duty.

Lunch and Snacks
Just like during the school year, lunch is available through our partners at Refueled Kids. Details on how to order lunches will be communicated closer to camp dates directly by email to you. Please provide your child with a water bottle with their name on it. All campers eat lunch at noon. Preschool and prekindergarten campers will be provided with a morning snack by Summer Camp staff, but please pack a snack for them if they have dietary restrictions. You are welcome to pack a snack for older children. Please avoid nuts and especially peanut butter in lunches and snacks; some children have severe allergies.

Miscellaneous

  • Parents of children not enrolled at FAIS in 2019-20 should complete the Guest Authorization form prior to the start of camp.
  • Preschoolers and prekindergarteners should bring a full change of clothes and supplies for nap time.
  • If your child is going to be late, absent, or needs to be picked up early, please contact summercamp@faispdx.org
  • We traditionally hold a celebratory event on Friday afternoon to showcase artwork, performances, or skills learned in camps. If you are able to donate (popsicles or other cool treats) and beverages for this event, please let us know.
  • Please inform Summer Camp staff of any specific health issue concerning your child if you have not already provided this information to FAIS.

Travel the World through Music: Grades TPS-PK (English)

Enjoy the experience of traveling around the world as you learn about different countries and cultures through song and dance! Each child will get their wiggles and giggles out and have some fun making music. Each child will receive a CD of the music we create.

The Life of Bugs: Grades TPS-PK (English)

Have you ever felt like stretching your wings and flying away? Are you always a-buzz with excitement? Are your antennae tingling!? It's the Life of Bugs! Flex your thorax and get all six of your legs out to our camp this summer and you'll have a blast! We will be creating many bug-themed crafts including our own butterfly wings and caterpillars! We will also create an ant colony, allowing us the chance to observe and care for our very own ants! At this camp you will get to see, pretend to be, and learn all about bugs.

Sewing and Crocheting: Grades K-2 (French / English)

This is a fun beginner class to learn the basics of sewing and crochet. We will learn how to hand sew, crochet, finger knit, and knit - all levels are welcome! Some projects include scarves, hats, bracelets, and pompoms.

Swimming: Grades K-2 (English)

Splash into summer with some swim lessons!  Students will learn the basics of swimming with experienced instructors.

Building: Bricks, Sticks & Summer Sports: K-2 (English)

Let’s play! Enhance your problem-solving and basic construction skills through the wonderful world of LEGO® blocks, Meccano, K’nex and more. You will have the opportunity to make your own creations, collaborate on elaborate group builds, and get involved with lots of other stimulating games. To balance the engineering side of this camp, we will also be playing outdoor sports including badminton, kickball, and soccer.

Sailing: Grades 2-5 (English)

Campers will head to Willamette Sailing Club for five days of learning the ropes, practical knowledge and of course getting out on the river! Sailors will learn the basics of small boat sailing while doing drills and games designed to practice boat handling skills. A great introduction to the sport of sailing!

Art of Henna: Grades 3-5 (English)

Henna has been used by many cultures throughout the world for thousands of years. In this camp, participants will learn how to apply henna to the skin in both Indian and Arabic styles. They will also learn how to prepare their own henna paste and create original designs.

ECO Summer Camp: Grades 4-8 (English /French)

Ecology in classrooms outdoors (ECO) is partnering with the French American International School to create a Special Green Program for students in 4th through 8th grade. Lessons will allow for outdoor exploration at an offsite ECO location, Dahl Beach City Park. Students will participate in habitat enhancement, stream and river studies, plant identification, field games, and more. Every day will build upon the prior day so that students leave the week with a comprehensive understanding of the ecosystem and the human impact on the environment.
Two ECO educators will accompany FAIS students throughout the day to bring the magic of the outdoors to life. ECO educators will deliver programming, provide all materials, and ensure the safety of all students.

Eats & Treats: Grades 6-8 (English)

Get ready to get creative in the kitchen. Spend the week making and decorating a variety of baked goods. Use royal icing on homemade sugar cookies, make meringue "lollipops", and decorate your own layered cake with buttercream or fondant to take home. We will turn all of our baked goods into works of art.

Animal Planet: Grades TPS-PK (English)

Explore the world of animals through craft, games, and gymnastics. Climb like a monkey, slither like a snake, pounce like a jaguar, and roll like a roly-poly! We will learn more about these animals by creating masks, hand/footprint art, and dioramas of their forest, desert, and ocean habitats.

Young Scientists: Grades TPS-PK (English)

This fun, hands-on camp will allow you to explore and carry out exciting science experiments: creating crystals and dry ice, making snow (without the snowstorm), and so much more. Who knows, we might have a future Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, or Louis Pasteur in our midst!

Art en Folie / Art Madness: Grades K-2 (French)

Open minded students explore art around the world starting from Africa. Discover unknown artists and their creation through painting, jewel making, and fashion around the world and create your own arts! 
Students will learn to create their own batik fabric designs as they explore layering pattern and color. They will also use brushes and metal objects in hot beeswax to stamp patterns on fabric. The fabric will be dyed, batiked and then overdyed in layers to create interesting patterns. They will also learn an ancient technique from Japan called Gyotaku. Come explore fun techniques to add your own stamp to your fabrics, t-shirts, bags and more!

French Cuisine: Grades 1-5 (French)

Bon appétit! A week of learning how to cook delicious traditional French food. Little chefs will be making cakes, signature dishes, and snacks while creating a fun cookbook to bring home and enjoy with their families. During the rest of the day they will be doing arts and crafts activities, all connected to the French culture. Get ready for a delicious week!

Rock Climbing: Grades 2-5 (English)

Does your child need a break from climbing the same tree in the backyard this summer? Excellent, because the Circuit Bouldering Gym offers an abundance of routes for your child to climb with varying levels of difficulty. Perfect for beginners to learn the basic fundamentals of climbing and build strength and confidence while trying something new. Equally perfect for intermediate or advanced climbers who can improve technique and stamina while climbing with friends.  The Circuit will provide experienced staff offering one hour of instruction daily followed by free climb, where the kids can show off their new skill set and play on the walls.

Open Signal: Movie Making: Grades 3-8 (English / French)

Movie-making camp resulting in certification on Open Signal’s MacBook Pro laptop, JVC 600 camera and field production equipment. Camp hours will be held Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm at Open Signal. There will be 1 camp instructor from Open Signal and Melanie Hindman from FAIS. Students will get to spend the entire week writing, acting, directing, and being in charge of their own short film!

Mythical Cartography: Grades 6-8 (English)

All the good fantasy books have maps of their mythical worlds. This is your chance to hand-draw one of your own! Make your own full size replica of your favorite fantasy map, or do some world building of your own. You will learn how to draw antique-looking terrain, fonts, 3D shadows, and how to age your map to make it look as authentic as possible. Have you ever tried drawing a map while looking at a landscape far below you? Join Mrs. Sinclair on this field trip and you will get that experience! We will visit the Portland Art Museum to study examples of topographical illustration, and then take the OHSU tram to the top of the West Hills to draw your view of Portland.

Ocean Adventure: Grades TPS-PK (English)

Join teacher Dave in his yellow submarine and explore the wonder that is the ocean! We will learn what lies beneath the waves, from the very bottom to the tippy top. Music, dancing, art and stories will make for a very fun week in the ocean!

Tiny Architects: Grades TPS-PK (English)

Be an architect, be an engineer, be like Picasso! Dream big and build big in this unique building focused camp. Students will learn by playing with a variety of mediums including magna-tiles®, LEGO DUPLO®, and Lincoln logs and acquire a strong sense of color, geometrical shapes, 3D forms, numbers and magnetic poles. Come create with your imagination!

Create your own Novel: Grades K-2 (English)

Why wait till later to make your own novel? This camp will focus on the creative and technical aspect of self-publishing a novel. Students will be able to create their own content for a novel or graphic novel in the front part of the week and then begin learning how to print and put together their own saddle stitched book.

Time Based Arts: Grades K-2 (French / English)

In the TBA (Time-based arts) camp, students will create projects that explore the convergence of contemporary performance, dance, music, new media, and visual arts. Each day, students will launch an inquiry into a medium that pushes the boundary of traditional artwork. The week will culminate in a walk -through art show displaying our week's discoveries.

Superheroes in Training: Grades TPS-PK (French)

It’s your turn to save the day! First, create your own superhero identity, complete with cape, mask, and other accessories. Next, hone your agility on obstacle courses, learn some key gymnastics and balance beam moves, and put your superpowers to work on a secret mission treasure hunt.

Fitness Dance: Grades TPS-PK (French)

Dance, sweat, jump and be creative in this movement based French fitness camp. This class will help develop key developmental skills. Students will learn routines to modern and vibrant music from a variety of cultures from Caribbean to French kids pop and music from around the world. In addition, students will get crafty with t-shirt and hat decorating activities, all of which will lead up to a special performance that the kids will put together to share at the end of the week!

Have you ever wanted to figure out how to make the best ice cream imaginable? Determine what cheese makes the gooiest grilled cheese? This is a hands on class where you will eat what you make and take home any extras.

Skyhook Ninja Warriors: Grades 6-8 (English)

Ninja Warriors, this is your calling! Have you been a fan and cheered on the contestants competing on American Ninja Warrior? Have you said "I want to do that!"? Well, now it is your turn to join in on the fitness and fun at Portland's very own Skyhook Ninja Warrior Fitness gym. Each student will have the opportunity to face obstacles, challenge themselves, and build strength in mind and body, as well as walking out feeling accomplished. This summer carnival camp will provide students with an opportunity to explore tropical cultures and tribal dance moves, and to create their own colorful costumes. Mixing visual and performing arts in a structured yet playful program, the activities will focus on delivering an exciting routine at the end of the week!

Hiking PDX: Grades K-2 (English)

With an abundance of hiking trails and parks, Portland has so much to offer. Urban Hiking will include beautiful sun shining trips to Forest Park, Audubon Society, Hoyt Arboretum, and a little finishing hike to our neighboring park, Mill Pond. Join the fun and breathe in the fresh air while appreciating some of Portland's small scenic treasures!

Deep Ocean Explorers: Grades 1-3 (French)

Dive into the sea! Children will explore the marine life and create an undersea scene representing a variety of ocean habitats. They will learn about the levels of the marine food chain and create an ocean wave bottle.
Hands-on games and activities will teach the children about current issues impacting our oceans and how we can help.
Art will be a large component of the week, by using multiple art mediums to express creativity: 3D projects, embolding technic on aluminum, ink...
The children will be exposed to different fun challenges such as creating boats that can race across the water.

Surf Camp: Grades 4-8 (French / English)

Experience the Oregon coast and all the beauty that goes along with it. Wildlife, nature, trails, the ocean, but it doesn’t stop there, SURFING! Sign up for FAIS’s very first surf camp instructors from Oregon Surf Adventures and our own Chrissy. The week will be filled with an abundance of excitement on land and in the water. Your child will be taught the basics, such as paddling, standing up and safety precautions on land before heading into the water with very qualified and trained surfers. Each child will be riding waves before the week is over and will experience the thrill of surfing. With four days of surfing and one day of hiking along the trails of Oswald State Park, your child is guaranteed a phenomenal week full of adventure and fun!

Chopped FAIS: Grades 6-8 (English)

Are your cooking skills up to par? What can you do with a set of random ingredients? Bring your friends and challenge them to see who is better. We will have testers to judge you on taste, presentation and use of ingredients. Are you up for the challenge?

Art Your Way: Inspiration & Creation 6-8 (English)

Bringing together motivated students, access to a wide variety of art media and supplies, studio space, an experienced instructor, and over 30 hours of exploration time creates a fantastic environment for students to learn and develop their skills in the Visual Arts. Art Your Way offers a customized learning experience supported by individualized instruction and feedback. Students will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of different art media or decide to concentrate on one area of greatest interest. Offerings include ceramics, batik, drawing, various media in painting, glazed tile design, spray paint art, sculpture, edible art, and more. Come experience a full week of creativity without interruptions or homework demands, and discover how good you can be!

Introducing TPS-PK students to all things FAIS! This camp focuses on the discovery of the French language, FAIS facilities, staff, classmates, and classroom habits (and of course, fun and new friends). Students will familiarize themselves with the basics of French and what a typical week of school might be like through fun activities and projects to take home. This camp is intended for preschool and prekindergarten students new to school.

Reprenons Nos Habitudes: Grades PS-PK (French / English)

This camp provides a relaxed transition to the new school year at FAIS. Welcome to Kindergarten: Grade K only (French / English)

This camp is designed to introduce new and returning FAIS students to the wonderful world of kindergarten. Activities, projects, and lessons will closely follow what happens during a typical week of kindergarten at FAIS. Returning students will be able to get back into the habit of speaking French during the day, and new students will have the opportunity to get in the groove before school begins.

Come join us for a week of basketball! This camp will keep campers very active. We will focus on skill development, teamwork, and fun! The fundamentals of basketball will be covered, such as passing, dribbling, and shooting. We will incorporate games, fun equipment, and team chemistry activities to keep things enjoyable for our campers.

Bike Town USA: Grades 2-5 (French / English)

Let’s go! This active camp makes the most of the sunny days Portland enjoys during its summers. Campers will experience easy to moderate rides all over Portland and Beaverton while learning how to identify plants and doing some wildlife watching.

Ice Skating: Grades 1-5 (French / English)

Campers will go ice skating at the Lloyd Ice Skating Center in Portland, focusing each day on safely building skating skills to play hockey, figure skate, or speed skate. Please bring a helmet, ice skates will be provided.

Rock Climbing: Grades 3-8 (English)

Does your child need a break from climbing the same tree in the backyard this summer? Excellent, because the Circuit Bouldering Gym offers an abundance of routes for your child to climb with varying levels of difficulty. Perfect for beginners to learn the basic fundamentals of climbing and build strength and confidence while trying something new. Equally perfect for intermediate or advanced climbers who can improve technique and stamina while climbing with friends.  The Circuit will provide experienced staff offering one hour of instruction daily followed by free climb, where the kids can show off their new skill set and play on the walls.

Theater: Grades 4-8 (English)

Students will attend a week long camp where they will work on practicing their acting chops! Led by FAIS's music teacher David Olson students will be sure to have the opportunity to learn about theater from all the great shows that he has put in over the years.

Study Skills: Grades 6-8 (English)

Get organized before the school year begins and you can start the year motivated and feeling in control of your learning experience. Learn how to keep useful class notes and how to reduce stress while taking important tests, refine your reading and listening skills, maximize your class and homework time, and learn how to promote good communication with your teachers. Make this school year your most successful ever! This camp is ideal for incoming 6th grade students.
