The fifth grade class takes a two-week trip to France at the end of the school year after graduation. The students stay with a host family, attend school, and take a number of field trips to local sites. The trip is chaperoned by the fifth grade teachers. It is the culmination of students' language and cultural experience in lower school, putting their knowledge to work and deepening their understanding of French culture.
Sixth graders go to Outdoor School for a week at the beginning of the school year. This team-building trip gives them the opportunity to get to know each other while they learn about the natural resources and beauties of their state. As students live and work together, they learn outdoor skills, improve science skills, and develop inquiry learning.
Seventh graders focus on the theater and performing arts during their spring trip to Seattle, WA. For three days they see plays, attend drama workshops, interact with stage actors, visit museums, and enjoy the sites of Seattle in the company of their peers. This trip allows the students to practice routines while traveling with a large group in a large city, so that they are better prepared for the eighth grade trip abroad.
Just before graduation, eighth grade students participate in a two-week trip abroad, where their language learning experience culminates in a home stay with a host family, a few days in a local school, and some sightseeing. Over the past years, the following destinations have been offered: Spain, Costa Rica, France, Germany, and China. After the home stay students spend a few days with their peers visiting sites in a larger city. The students are strongly encouraged to travel to the country of the beginning language they started studying in sixth grade. Objectives include the student using the language that they have been studying for the last three years, experiencing the culture of the various countries, and to travel with friends as a conclusion to their years here at FAIS.
