About:

PM Classes run for 15 weeks each semester. There are no classes during school holidays, but classes still run on half days.

Students signed up for PM Classes will be escorted from their classrooms by extracurricular staff to enjoy a light snack before their classes begin. PM Class instructors will then escort their students to their classroom locations. Any student not picked up at the end of their PM Class will then be escorted to their FASCA room and can be picked up from there. FASCA is available until 6:00 p.m. No Lower School children will be left unattended. Gilkey students will have the freedom to make their own way to PM Classes and are responsible for remembering their schedules.

PM Classes typically start at 3:45 (or 3:30 p.m. for some Maternelle grades), and run for 45 minutes, 1 hour, or 1½ hours. Classes are offered in both French and English--the language of instruction is indicated in the class description.

We do our best to give you advanced notification of a canceled class; however, we are not always able to do so. Canceled classes will have make-up classes at the end of the semester, and any child attending FASCA on the day of a canceled class will not be charged for attending. Please report PM Class absences to Laura Birshan.

Discover that snakes are smooth and dry, lizards have no earlobes, and geckos can lick their eyeballs!

Your Galactic Address – (4/10) How are we affected by the orbit and rotation of our planet? How far away are we from the Sun? In this space science class, students learn how Earth fits into our vast and ever–changing universe. Students will act out the Earth's movement through the solar system and create take-home activities to share their knowledge. Topics include astronomy and space science.

Bug me – (4/17) What has six legs, three body parts and invades your picnic? Students discover how insects’ bodies change as they grow and how they survive in a world where they are one of nature’s smallest creatures. Participants will design their own insect to take home and will have the option to hold live insects. Topics include camouflage, insect anatomy and life cycles.

Float Your Boat – (5/1) Young engineers will experiment with sinking and floating objects then use their new knowledge to solve creative challenges.

Human Systems – (5/8) What happens to french fries after you eat them? How do you lift, throw, run and jump? What helps you think and learn? Students explore the skeletal, digestive, nervous, muscular, respiratory and circulatory systems, while learning how to take their own vital signs and keep their body healthy. Topics include human anatomy and body systems.

Move your class – (5/15) Get your class moving and shaking while investigating the effects of exercise on the human body. Students explore the benefits and science behind exercise. Room requirements: A large room, such as a multipurpose room or gym. Topics include physical fitness, biology and health.

In this Engineering for Kids class, students will have the opportunity to explore 3D Printing and Game Design in great depth. Email Laura Birshan if you are only interested in participating in 1 section of the class.

  • 3D Printing plus Handprinted 3D Creations (8 Weeks)

3D printing is a fun, exciting new world where design has married technology to produce a fascinating array of possibilities that are truly changing the world in myriad ways. From revolutionizing the hobbyist’s ability to quickly bring their ideas to life, to launching a new industrial revolution in how materials are manufactured, and stimulating the migration of large material manufacturers from the creation and stocking of tangible materials, to instead focusing on the creation and dissemination of designs for materials. Besides the computer based 3D design, students will also have hand-on experience. They will use 3Doodler pen to make things like a robot, a rocket or even an Eiffel Tower.

  • Game Design – Platformer Games (7 Weeks)

A platformer game is a side-scrolling, Mario-type game where students program characters and a two-dimensional obstacle course. They attempt to avoid or overcome enemies and reach an end goal on multiple levels. We will create our own game of defending a dojo that from a ninja attack, delivering pizza, or escaping an ancient temple. In this class, we will use the Engineering Design Process to create a storyboard to outline the rules of play and characters for our game. Then, we will use Clickteam Fusion 2.5 to bring our storyboard to life with programming. At the end of the class, everyone takes home a working Windows-compatible game!
