Middle School Open House--This Thursday

The FAIS Office of Admissions is kicking off Open House Season with a Middle School event on Thursday, November 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This Open House is for 6th-8th grade admissions for fall 2016. There will be a presentation about Gilkey by the Middle School Division Head and an opportunity for Q & A with teachers, current students, and parents. Please invite your friends and colleagues- word of mouth is our best advertising! Prospective students are welcome to attend with their parents, and there is no need to RSVP. Please contact the Office of Admissions with any questions at admissions@faispdx.org or (503) 292-7776 ext. 310.

Emergency Notification System Test

FAIS will be testing its emergency notification system this Thursday, November 5 around 1:30 p.m, at which time you will receive a phone call, text message (if you have previously opted-in), and email. FAIS uses this system for urgent communications, including school closures due to inclement weather. If you have any questions, please email Penelope.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on November 23 and 24 and will take place in the Gym, in an arena-style setting. School is not in session during conference days. Teachers will be available on a first-come first-served basis; there are no appointments needed. This is an important time set aside for teachers to meet with parents about their child and his or her performance in school. Please note that we are not able to reschedule conferences with all of your child's teachers on the same day if you are unable to attend. In this case, as always, please feel free to schedule individual meetings with specific teachers if you have concerns. You can expect to spend about 5 - 7 minutes conferencing with each teacher that you wish to see. In some cases and at certain times of day, you may have to wait to see a teacher.

Conference Schedule

  • Monday, November 23: 8:00 - 11:30AM, and 12:45 - 3:30PM
    • Teachers will break for lunch from 12:00 to 12:45 and will not be available to meet
  • Tuesday, November 25: 8:00AM – 1:00PM
  • Genna Robertson-Hall, Maud Artola Durand and Tiffanie Herrmann will be available on Monday only
  • Christiane Seydel will be available Monday morning only (8:00-11:30AM)
  • Paola Iturralde will be available Monday and Tuesday morning only

The winning ticket will be drawn at the November 18 PLC meeting and you need not be present to win.

Wednesday Open Tours in November

Do you know someone who is interested in learning more about FAIS? Encourage them to visit campus- it’s the best way to gather information and see our programs in action! The Office of Admissions hosts Open Tours at 9:00 AM most Wednesdays, October through May. As Open Houses for both the Lower School and Middle School are taking place during the next two weeks, the only Open Tour scheduled for this month will be on the 18th. No RSVP necessary.

Lower School Open House--Wednesday, November 11

The first Lower School Open House of the year will take place on Wednesday, November 11 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. This event is for preschool-5th grade admissions for fall 2016. The Director of Admissions will make a presentation about our program and immersion education, which will be followed by tours of campus led by current parents and a Q & A session with administrative staff. Please invite your friends and colleagues— word of mouth is our best advertising! No RSVP necessary. Please contact the Office of Admissions with any questions at admissions@faispdx.org or (503) 292-7776 ext. 310.

Important Drop-Off and Pick-Up Reminders

As we move into November, campus traffic is flowing smoothly with few problems. There are just a few things to remember: do not park along the red curbs during drop-off and pick-up, make sure that the car behind you can pass if they need to, and please do not block the entry to the parking lot between the Center for the Arts and the Préau. Additionally, the two reserved parking spots are reserved 24 hours a day, and may only be used by the DeLong and Vloon families. Many thanks for keeping our campus safe and congenial!

Spring PM Classes start January 25th. If any parents with niche talents are interested in teaching a PM Class, please contact Laura Birshan for more information. This is a great way to fulfill volunteer hours!
