Arts pour les Petits: PS-K (French)

Students will use different art techniques including charcoal, acrylic, ink, and more to create quality art projects. Projects may take the form of portraits, landscapes, and modern art. This class will also introduce various world artists.

Chinese Stories, Songs, and Art: Grades PS-K (English with Mandarin) CLASS CANCELED

Explore Chinese culture by listening to Chinese stories, singing Chinese songs, and making Chinese art. Each month will focus on learning a different song, and mastering a different artistic medium. Parents will receive a CD of songs learned. Examples of art are paper folding and cutting, painting and calligraphy, and Chinese knotting.

Comédie Musicale: Grades 3rd-5th (French)

La comédie musicale is a theatre genre, with comedy, singing and dance. In this class we will be learning choreography and dancing with accessories. We will work on both body and facial expressions, and acting and singing. There will be a performance, complete with costumes, at the end of the semester.

Drawing, Illustration: Grades 6th-8th (English)

Explore the methods used to become an expert artist, drafter, and illustrator. There will be life drawing exercises using line and value; we will also draw from the imagination and explore visual storytelling.

I Heart Handmade: Grades 2nd-5th (English)

Get ready for spring with custom printed tote bags, tea cup candles, finger puppets, and butterfly embroidered tees. Students will learn and practice sewing skills, basic jewelry making techniques, and work with paper crafts.

International Folktales and Improv: Grades K-3rd (French) CLASS CANCELED

Using the large scale of sounds, syllables, and words of the French Language, we will create songs inspired by folktales and learn different styles of music from around the world. Students will explore the world of improvisation through games, hand held percussion, dance and songs while developing their sense of music.

Explore international street fare, from Indonesia to Europe to South America, in this hands-on cooking class. LEGO® Create and Build: Grades 1st-5th (French)

Using multiple LEGO Creator sets and the LEGO education WeDoTM Robotics Construction software, this detail oriented class will afford students the opportunity to work on, not just creativity, but specifically following step by step instructions and problem solving. We will learn the ins and outs of model building, cumulating in a collaborative effort to piece together an advanced model as a group. Students will also build and program LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors.

Les Arts Créatifs: Grades 1st-5th (French)

In this class materials such as paint and clay will be explored to create what is in the imagination. There will also be a focus on color and shape.

An initiation to Rugby, this class will provide the skills to learn basic Rugby movement and rules. Rugby is a contact sport, but rules will be modified for younger players. This class will be fun for all regardless of athleticism and is a great way to channel energy while encouraging sportsmanship.

Judo I: Grades 1st-8th (English)

Judo, a blend of jujitsu and other martial arts, incorporates the philosophies of mutual welfare, benefit, and efficiency. This class will begin with tumbling and flexibility, and then build on these skills to learn the techniques of throwing and pinning. The goal for this class is to instill self-discipline, responsibility, and accountability, and for the students to achieve better fitness and have fun. Students will need to come to class with a Judo uniform (must be a Judo gi as opposed to other martial art uniforms).

This class is based on the same goals and philosophy as our Judo I class, but is designed for those familiar with Judo. Les Petits Comédiens: Grades PS-K (French)

Through games and improvisation students will explore new worlds by imagining situations and creating stories using their voice, body, and various props. This class helps develop imagination, self-confidence as well as language and social skills. Parents are invited to the last class of the term for a small performance.

Little Sounds Explorers: Grades PS-K (French) CLASS CANCELED

Explore sound and the different ways to produce it. We will illustrate songs with stories and paintings in order to help understand the effects of sound. We will invent our own stories and illustrate them. This class will encourage students to make music daily.

LEGO® Robotics Workshop: Grades 4th-6th (English)

African Dance: Grades K-2 (French)

African dance is a powerful and expressive dance. Not only a performing art, this style of dance teaches social patterns and values. It has helped people work, mature, praise or criticize members of the community, celebrate festivals and funerals, compete, and recite history and poetry. In this class we will learn African dance movements and choreography. We will also work with drums and rhythm. The last class will feature a performance, complete with costumes, for the FAIS community.

This class is a creative thinking and writing class where students may create works of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, comics and much more! Improv and Performance: Grades 1st-4th (French)

The class will build on the previous term, continuing the work on the play adapted from "La comédie des Ogres" to be performed at school and for official participation in the French theatre Festival (March 16-23, 2013). Returning and new participants will work together to make the story come alive while learning or improving theatrical techniques. In this class students will get to make and taste most commonly seen Chinese food such as different types of dumplings, noodles, pancakes and layered pancakes, etc.  It will be a fun and yummy way to learn basic Chinese words associated with cooking, serving, and tasting food.

This class is an initiation to Fencing with the "Fleuret". Learn the all-encompassing basics of this sport such as movement, offensive and defensive strategies, as well as rules and the specific vocabulary in a relaxed atmosphere. Students will get to put their new skills to use by dueling in bouts and also refereeing.

Henna: Grades 6th-8th (English) CLASS CANCELED

Students will learn the culture behind, and how to make, henna tattoo designs. Henna tattoos are a non-permanent, natural product made from plant leaves that has been used as body art since medieval times in Egypt, the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean countries. A henna paste is applied to the skin in intricate designs. The resulting brown stain will fade away within a few weeks.

Jewelry Design: Grades 6th-8th (English)

In this class, students will study different styles of jewelry design from around the world. They will then create new pieces inspired by the research. Students will keep a design journal, create inspiration boards, experiment with new materials and participate in a Student Designer Showcase at the end of the class.
