Information for Incoming Students

Welcome to the French American International School! Here you will find information and forms for new FAIS students and families.

Athletics

Gilkey Athletics offers a number of fall, winter and spring competitive sports teams. Most teams compete in the Metro Christian League (MCL), a sports league for independent, private and public middle schools.

Each season lasts two to three months and meets for practice and/or competition about three times per week. The cost for each sport is $150. There is a “no cut” policy. Teams will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you have questions about the Athletics program please contact Director of Extracurricular Programs Jonathan Mascaut

FASCA, FAIS Plus, and Milk

The FAIS Extracurricular Department provides an enriching environment for students outside of the classroom.

You may purchase milk for the school year ($70), prepaid FASCA (after-school care) plans, and FAIS Plus* (childcare on In Service days and Parent-Teacher Conferences) using this online form. There are separate registration forms for Athletics and PM Classes. Payment and registration in person at the FAIS Front Office is also accepted for all extracurricular programs. If you use FASCA but do not purchase a prepaid plan, you will be billed at a rate of $8.50/hour.

*With themed workshops and fun field trips, FAIS Plus is so much more than just childcare. Read about this new and improved program here!

ACE / Arts Week

Fall Arts and Cultural Enrichment Week is October 21-25. School is not in session, but the FAIS Extracurricular Department offers optional workshops centered around the arts. This year, registration for both ACE Week (for Lower School students) and Arts Week (for Middle School students) is offered on a day-by-day basis. Students may attend as many or as few days as they wish.

Hours for both programs are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Lunch Program

FAIS is continuing its search for a lunch provider that can deliver a responsibly-packaged, diverse menu that is healthy, fresh, and locally-sourced to meet the demands of our community. We are hopeful to be able to secure a good fit in the coming months.  Such a program may result in an increase in the daily cost of lunches, but will provide FAIS families with a convenient and healthy alternative to packing lunches. Any updates will be posted on this webpage and in the weekly newsletters.

In the interim, we are happy to continue to offer lunch service from Burrito Bar as a hot lunch option twice weekly.

Please visit the FAIS Parents welcome page for current lunch forms.

PM Classes

PM Classes fill up quickly, so be sure to register soon. Visit the PM Classes webpage for all workshop descriptions, or visit this link to register now.

Required Forms

Please visit the School Forms webpage to complete your FAIS student's forms online. If you need your username or password, please email pbabst@faispdx.org.

The Student Information and Authorization form is required for each student enrolled at FAIS. You will be asked to verify your contact information, to authorize FAIS to provide medical treatment for your child, to inform FAIS of your child's recent immunizations, and to designate emergency contacts. You will also have the opportunity to inform the School of your child's allergies or medical conditions. The address information provided in this form will be used in the FAIS Family Directory.

The Alternate Pick-up Authorization form is required only if someone else will routinely be picking your child up from school, for example, in a carpool situation. You may add individuals to this form at any time throughout the school year by contacting FAIS directly. For changes in pick-up that are not habitual, please call the School to allow permission for that particular instance. Parents and legal guardians do not need to be designated on this form.

Please use the Additional Family form to verify or add stepparents and grandparents, and to inform FAIS of new siblings.

Gilkey students and their parents are also required to read, sign and return the Middle School Student Network Responsible Use Policy before they will be allowed to use the School network.

Fourth and fifth grade students and their parents are required to read, sign, and return the Lower School Student Network Responsible Use Policy.

Scrip Program

The FAIS Scrip Program is a free and easy way to raise money to support FAIS events and  activities. Scrip is just another term for gift cards or gift  certificates that are tendered just like cash at participating  businesses. Every merchant that participates has their own Gift  Cards/Certificates with special logos, colors, water marks, serial  numbers, and dollar increments. Scrip is used like cash!

Visit the Parents welcome page to download the current scrip form.

Volunteer

Parent participation via volunteer commitment plays an essential role at FAIS by 1) modeling responsible, service-oriented behavior to students and 2) involving the entire family in the student’s educational life. In addition, the volunteer system allows FAIS to keep administrative expenses low relative to many other schools.

FAIS requires that every family commit to 20 hours of service each year. If the 20 hours are not met, families will be charged $20 per unfulfilled hour.

Sign up for volunteer opportunities online here.

New Parent Orientation

Back-to-School packets for parents who did not attend New Parent Orientation on August 28 are available for pick-up from the Front Office through the first week of school. You may download the presentations via the links below.
