PM Class Spotlight: Jewelry Technique & Design's Student Designer Showcase

Posted June 14, 2012

On June 1, in a downtown jewelry boutique surrounded by friends and family, the ladies of Jewelry Technique & Design celebrated their creative accomplishments in style at the 1st Annual "Student Designer Showcase." The evening was a special opportunity for Gilkey students to not only showcase their work outside of the FAIS campus, but also to create new connections with local Portland artisans and independent jewelry designers. Featured designers included Clara D., Liv G., Lauren L., Claire M., Arianna M., Sophia P., Avital W., Kristen W., and Pirrie W. Special thanks to our generous host Jewelie Randall, local jewelry enthusiast and owner of Flora (www.florapdx.com) for her hospitality.

Since the beginning of the year, these students have been working on their "collections" every Friday after school. Students were encouraged to collect inspiration from both local, national and international artists to create their inspiration boards. Then, when presented with the challenge of creating a collection with a cohesive theme and color story, each student individually selected colors and materials that best represented their inspiration, and finally crafted each piece by hand. When asked about her collection, 6th grader Claire says, "I was inspired by Audrey Hepburn, hounds-tooth (the pattern), and costume jewelry. I chose to work with the colors black and white... with a pop of crimson red for fun!"

If your Gilkey student is itching to be creative this summer, it's not too late to sign up for "Bling It On!" -- a series of full-day design workshops offered through the Summerfest program. In addition to creating personalized jewelry and accessories, we're headed to the Museum of Contemporary Craft and Oregon College of Art & Craft for a sneak peak at metal casting. For more info, be sure to check out the Summerfest webpage.
