Recap of Gilkey Talents – The Showcase, Community Service, and Student Accomplishments

The 2012 Gilkey Talent Showcase was a hit! Acts included martial arts, acapela singing, jamming guitar solos, violin duets, boy and coed bands, and singing in Chinese, Spanish, and English. What a talented group of middle school students we have!
The show was organized by the music teacher, David Olson's, Stagecraft elective class. Students from his class guided the application and audition process, as well as planning and producing the show. The master of ceremony was 8th grader Thomas P. With his British accent and quick jokes, he helped keep the show ahead of schedule. Joining him were student council president and vice president, Shayna P. and Cameron B. These eighth graders helped to honor the talents of all Gilkey students with shout-outs for community service accomplishments and extracurricular achievements (see list of recipients below).

Eagle Excellence Awards for Community Service
All Gilkey students support the missions of FAIS and the IB Middle Years Program by participating in community service. Our community service program aims to encourage intercultural awareness through acceptance, respect, empathy and understanding. These interactive service activities are meant to enrich students emotionally, socially, morally and culturally. Community service requirements are: 10 hours for sixth grade, 13 hours for seventh grade, and 15 hours for eighth. This year Gilkey students contributed almost 3000 hours of service to the community!
The Gilkey Eagle Excellence Award recognizes special students whose community service contributions far exceed Gilkey’s expectations. Their spirit of service demonstrates responsible citizenship! This year Gilkey was able to honor seventeen recipients of the award. Their combined 921 hours of service represent 30 percent of the total hours earned by all 176 Gilkey students.

Honoring Gilkey Talents and Achievements 2011-12
While the Gilkey Talent Showcase focuses on entertaining talent, Gilkey students are talented in so many ways, and it’s important to pay tribute to their efforts. During the Gilkey Talent Showcase, the student body president and vice president, Shayna P. and Cameron B., shared many our students’ amazing and diverse accomplishments. Here are some highlights:
- Maya FP – Won Intl. Soccer tournament in Las Vegas playing a year up
- Joshua F – Won State championship football game, recovered game saving fumble
- Gaby R – Chosen in top 15 of 250 girls for Jr. Blazer dancer
- Dorsey W – Catholic Youth Football won state in 11/12 division
- Nikita L – Won 6 medals at state swim meet
- Many students – Proud of their grades in school and balance with extracurricular activities
- Aryana A – Ranked 17th in nation in fencing
- Torin P – Classic soccer team won state
- Mathieu dB – Performed in a Shakespeare play and did a monologue
- Wilson W – Memorized and performed 15 page guitar piece
- Anna-Sophia B– Dance team made platinum in two dance competitions
- Asa M – Scored first on his ski team
- Elsa D – Wrote a song and is going to perform it live downtown in front of 300 people
- Aiden M-S – Played in the presidents day invitational (hockey)
- Madison R – earned a dance scholarship at a competition
- Adin B – won every race for 1500 in track and all but one he entered for cross country
- Jonah B – Attended id2 National Training Camp in Dallas sponsored by US Club Soccer
- Hadley W – Set a meet record at districts for the girls long jump and qualified for meet of champions
- Emily H – Team got first in a dance competition and is now going to nationals in Chicago
- Tatyana O – won a skating competition in Mountain View
