Delicious Tribute to
25 Years of Multicultural Education
FAIS is pleased to announce the publication of a cookbook in conjunction with the school’s 25th Anniversary celebration. L’ivre de Cuisine is an amazing, mouth-watering anthology of more than 200 recipes contributed by parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and friends. Some are family treasures spanning generations.
“This book is the physical embodiment of the spirit of our school,” says cookbook co-chairman Meri Kemp. “The recipes are French, Spanish, German, American, Persian, Korean, Egyptian, Swedish and Italian, to name a few. Food brings people of different cultures together more quickly than almost anything else.”
Blessed with seriously talented cooks in its midst, and even several professional chefs and winemakers, a cookbook was a natural for the FAIS. Recipes such as Veau aux Olives and Clafoutis aux Cerises appear in their original French language with the English translation. Others have historical interest such as the WWI cake. The sections start with Ice Breakers – Nibbles, Dips and Sips and Mmm, Mmm Soup and end with Dining with Friends and Things Sweet. From the truly French, to the truly American to the truly adult-only chocolate Snowball-tinis, to the gourmet Tomato-Lemon Cheese Toasts to the very fast on a school night Easy Tender Chicken -- the appeal of the recipes is wide. Included are the “not your typical American casseroles” such as Egyptian Lasagna or Greek-Style Macaroni Bake or Lebanese Shepherd’s Pie. Or the very Northwest Maple-Ginger Glazed Salmon perhaps served with the arteries-beware Miss Beth’s Cardiac Arrest Potato Casserole. And because recipes were submitted and tested by families, ingredients come together quickly, and have high “kid appeal.” There are sidebars and the “lagniappe” section (French for “bonus”) that include lunch box tips and recipes for bubbles, play dough and flubber.
