By Katie Márquez, Extracurricular Programs Administrative Assistant

As you probably know, FASCA is FAIS' main after-school program. Any student still on campus at the end of the school day is directed there. Extracurricular aides provide a snack, fun activities, and even a little bit of homework help. What you may not know is that there is more than one way to pay for this program.

In general we will invoice you for the time your child spends in FASCA; however, if you would like to pre-pay for FASCA you have three options:

    Semi-Yearly and the Yearly Plans
These plans are great for families that know they will be using FASCA regularly, for about an hour and a half or more on most days. The Yearly Plan covers all FASCA use for the entire school year. The Semi-Yearly Plan is a little less committed than the yearly plan--try it out for the first half of the year, or wait until the next semester to see how much you are really spending in childcare.

    • The first semester runs September 4—February 1
    • The second semester runs February 4—June 19

    The Super Yearly Plan
Like the previous two plans, this plan includes FASCA for the entire year, but you also get all seven FAIS + days prepaid.

For all plans please remember that you will still have to sign your child out of FASCA and FAIS + for attendance purposes. All plans are available for purchase online. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Extracurricular Department Administrative Assistant Katie Márquez.

  • ACE Week: Theater of Performing Arts

By Ryan Scheel, Assistant Director or Extacurricular Programs

The main focus of Fall ACE Week (October 22-26) will be working up a short skit or play to be filmed and premiered at the end of the week. We will kick off this ACE week with a workshop from the Oregon Children’s Theatre entitled: Read, Write, Act. This will help lay the foundation for the week, as the children will learn about scripts, character development, and acting while receiving a base knowledge of the theater. The Oregon Ballet Theatre will host another workshop. The end of the week will be focused on going out and experiencing the theater. On Thursday we will visit the Northwest Children’s Theater to watch Roald Dahl’s BFG (Big Friendly Giant) and have a picnic lunch at Couch Park. On Friday, we will head to the Armory to get a behind the scenes look at how Portland Center Stage is run and what the backstage experience is like. We will also head to the Newmark Theater to watch Duck 4 President!

As usual we will be using Eco-Shuttle’s 48 passenger biodiesel school bus and their 25 passenger mini-bus in order to help with our carbon footprint. All age groups are welcome to attend the field trips, but if you choose to not send your child there will be alternative care available for those days. However, please know that your child may not be with other children in their age group.

For those not interested in attending the full week, there will be a two day option for Thursday and Friday, which are the field trip days. It is possible to attend only the beginning of the week instead; however, there will be no way to ensure your child being in the video or getting to fully participate in the project unless they attend on Thursday and Friday.

    ACE Week Hours
Workshops and activities begin at 9 AM and end at 3:30 PM; however, the registration price includes morning childcare beginning at 8 AM and afternoon care until 5 PM.

  • Discovery Park Soon to be Unveiled

FAIS has a new outdoor learning and play space almost ready to explore. Discovery Park is progressing towards completion, thanks to the generous donors to our 2012 Special Appeal, which raised over $70,000 this past spring. The former sheep field is now embellished with a stone-paved plaza as its entrance, boulders for climbing, stepping stones, and saplings. Soon to be installed will be a small water feature, paths in and around the trees, seats and benches made from logs, and a natural amphitheater. Come take a look!

  • A Note from Pam

    Pam Dreisin, Head of School
    marigolds_with_building.jpg

    Dear Friends,

What a delight to see the campus bustling with students, teachers and families. Everyone seems to be settling into their classroom routines and the rhythm of the new school year. I want to thank our community for their patience during these first few weeks during drop-off and pick up times. Families are learning to navigate our traffic patterns on campus and the students are getting more comfortable being dropped off at the curb and heading into classrooms on their own. I am very grateful to all our families and staff who are making the extra effort to carpool, bike, and walk to school.

I am looking forward to meeting our new families at the upcoming New Parent Welcome Reception on Friday, September 28 at 8:30 AM in the Rose Préau Commons, as well as re-connecting with current families at upcoming PLC meetings and Back-to-School Nights. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful autumn weather.
