This year's Student Council members were honored with a recognition lunch on June 6 for their contributions to the School and for representing their peers. In addition to certificates of appreciation, representatives received a rose for every semester of service. Eighth grader Shayna P. has honed her leadership skills for FIVE semesters, ending her tenure with two semesters as Student Council President! The combined experience of this year's leaders allowed them to become risk takers by modifying many traditional events, with stellar results! Bravo.

Students interested in being leaders for 2012-13 demonstrated their potential this May by completing an application, getting a staff vote of confidence, and braving a question and answer session led by current student council members. In addition to this formal process to be selected for student council, next fall Gilkey seventh and eighth graders may choose student council as their Wednesday elective class. They will considered as a “member-at-large” and will also be a part of this collaborative leadership team. The fresh ideas and new energy will surely lead to another outstanding year of student-led events.

Development Director Bids Adieu
By Tricia Blood, Director of Development
Read MoreDear Friends,
Once upon a time, a typical send off for my kids included a kiss, a hug and an encouraging reminder to “Pack your manners,” “Keep moving forward,” or “Make a difference!” Now that my girls are older, they return the favor time and again by bidding me “Adieu” with the same sentiments. It makes me laugh -- the rascals are getting even with me!
It might be silly, but I never really tire of hearing those simple statements, and they bring a smile to my face whenever I see them in action. In six and a half years at FAIS, I have witnessed countless examples of compassion, support and dedication to the greater good, all in the name of making the FAIS community a better place for everyone.

What a marked difference FAIS families make, and what incredible headway the School makes each year, thanks to your hard work and commitment. From the Annual Fund to the Annual Gala, from new family mentor to class parent, from yearbook to Facebook, from class parties to graduation parties, from community service to Board service, thank you for showing up, raising your hand, coming to the table, throwing your hat in the ring, and well, for saying YES to FAIS.
I’ll miss the FAIS community tremendously –- faculty, staff, parents, students, even grandparents! Selfishly though, I’ll be watching, taking notes from afar on all the good things to come in the near future. Merci milles fois for packing your manners, helping FAIS to keep moving forward and for making a difference!
Affectueusement,
Tricia B.

Joining him were student council president and vice president, Shayna P. and Cameron B. These eighth graders helped to honor the talents of all Gilkey students with shout-outs for community service accomplishments and extracurricular achievements (see list of recipients below).

Eagle Excellence Awards for Community Service
All Gilkey students support the missions of FAIS and the IB Middle Years Program by participating in community service. Our community service program aims to encourage intercultural awareness through acceptance, respect, empathy and understanding. These interactive service activities are meant to enrich students emotionally, socially, morally and culturally. Community service requirements are: 10 hours for sixth grade, 13 hours for seventh grade, and 15 hours for eighth. This year Gilkey students contributed almost 3000 hours of service to the community!
The Gilkey Eagle Excellence Award recognizes special students whose community service contributions far exceed Gilkey’s expectations. Their spirit of service demonstrates responsible citizenship! This year Gilkey was able to honor seventeen recipients of the award. Their combined 921 hours of service represent 30 percent of the total hours earned by all 176 Gilkey students.

Green Team Hosts Guest Speaker
By Ryan Scheel, Extracurricular Programs Assistant Director
Read MoreThis past Wednesday the Green Team hosted a special presentation from Hannah Jones for all 3rd graders. Hannah runs the sustainability team for Nike. She spoke to the children about how change can come from individual actions and ideas. “For our constantly changing world we need ideas that have never been thought of before and need to have creative thinking to come up with these ideas.” She posed many thought-provoking questions, and led an interactive activity: students thought of sustainable ideas that had never been done then placed these ideas on a poster board. Many fantastic ideas came out of this exercise, such as a hamster-powered car, streets made of Velcro that would run cars and stop lights based on static electricity, and 3D technology for clothing! Hannah left the kids by asking “What’s one thing you’ll do differently?”

FAIS Alumni Perform Molière
By FAIS Alumni Kathryn Liu and Maddie Nicoloff
Read MoreMme Cansse's high school french class presented a French play by Molière on Thursday, May 31. The play was held in the FAIS Rose Préau Commons, and attended by the students of the Gilkey French track, as well as some of the School's other teachers. The 13 students in the class were composed of a mixture of freshmen, sophomores, and seniors.
Dressed in authentic costumes of the era, the students had a lot of fun portraying the comedic characters of Molière's "L'Avare." "L'Avare" is an upbeat comedy that follows the story of a greedy man named Harpagon, as he hides his money and tries to marry off his children in pursuit of financial gain. The play is full of quirky characters and hilarious misunderstandings, well played by the high school class.
The students involved, led by Angelique Cansse, included: Kathryn Liu (Harpagon), Jake Riswold (Cleante 1), Quentin Hahn (Cleante 2), Emily Levine (Elise), Ansen Burr (Frosine), Luciana Alonso (La Fleche 1), Samara Michaelson (La Fleche 2), Tess Michaelson (Maitre Jacques), Adelaide Knox (Valere 1), Maddy Nicoloff (Valere 2), Toni Castro (Mme Claude, Marianne), Dhabin An (Maitre Simon, Brindavoine), Kieran McTague (La Merluche). The production was a fun and educational experience for all involved!

PM Class Spotlight: Jewelry Technique & Design's Student Designer Showcase
By Genna Hall, Extracurricular Aide/Summerfest Instructor/Jewelry Desig
Read MoreOn June 1, in a downtown jewelry boutique surrounded by friends and family, the ladies of Jewelry Technique & Design celebrated their creative accomplishments in style at the 1st Annual "Student Designer Showcase." The evening was a special opportunity for Gilkey students to not only showcase their work outside of the FAIS campus, but also to create new connections with local Portland artisans and independent jewelry designers. Featured designers included Clara D., Liv G., Lauren L., Claire M., Arianna M., Sophia P., Avital W., Kristen W., and Pirrie W. Special thanks to our generous host Jewelie Randall, local jewelry enthusiast and owner of Flora (www.florapdx.com) for her hospitality.
Since the beginning of the year, these students have been working on their "collections" every Friday after school. Students were encouraged to collect inspiration from both local, national and international artists to create their inspiration boards. Then, when presented with the challenge of creating a collection with a cohesive theme and color story, each student individually selected colors and materials that best represented their inspiration, and finally crafted each piece by hand. When asked about her collection, 6th grader Claire says, "I was inspired by Audrey Hepburn, hounds-tooth (the pattern), and costume jewelry. I chose to work with the colors black and white... with a pop of crimson red for fun!"
If your Gilkey student is itching to be creative this summer, it's not too late to sign up for "Bling It On!" -- a series of full-day design workshops offered through the Summerfest program. In addition to creating personalized jewelry and accessories, we're headed to the Museum of Contemporary Craft and Oregon College of Art & Craft for a sneak peak at metal casting. For more info, be sure to check out the Summerfest webpage.
