The French American International School Summerfest program seeks to follow in the FAIS tradition of providing outstanding learning experiences for students.  It is focused on creating unique and innovative opportunities in areas of learning that are fundamental to overall student development including visual arts, performing arts, physical fitness and performance, and cultural trips.

WEEK 1: July 15 - 19

Art Your Way: Inspiration and Creation │ FULL DAY

hat would create the perfect art experience for you? What would inspire you to create at your best level and grow in your artistic abilities? This is your opportunity to be a part

of creating an art workshop that you can personalize to meet your artistic goals. Do you want to explore a wide variety of different art media or would you like to concentrate

on one area you know you love? Come experience a full week of creating without interruptions or homework demands and discover what you can really do!

Wet and Wild │ FULL DAY

What is better on a warm summer day than hanging out with your friends at the pool and playing games in the park? During this week of Wet and Wild, we will be traveling around Portland to discover the best outdoor and aquatic sites. Each morning we will select one of Portland's great parks and play a variety of games such as some killer badminton, bocce ball, disc golf, croquet and capture the flag. And of course, don’t forget to work on your Ahhh! skills because we will be putting them to the test. Then we will have a picnic lunch (or find a nearby food cart) to fill up before heading off to the pools to find the fastest slides, the highest diving boards and the laziest rivers. Come relax with your friends and enjoy Portland’s great summer!

See the city like never before—spend five mornings touring by bike! Each day is a new adventure and brings a new vista. You will gradually increase your mileage as you become a more experienced and confident cyclist. Bike safety is emphasized, and you will learn how to keep you and your bike running smoothly and in good repair. Snacks and support will be provided along the way. We will top off each day with a special treat as rewards for our efforts including a stop at Voodoo Doughnuts!

CSI Forensic Science │ FULL DAY

Ever wondered how detectives solve their cases? Now is your chance to learn how to find the important clues identifying who committed the crime! The CSI Forensic Science course takes advantage of students' fascination with mysteries using minute, ordinary, or unexpected crime-scene evidence to catch the culprit, and combines that with dozens of academic skills they need to learn and sharpen. Students, through a variety of educational presentations and hands-on experiences, will learn how their acquired scientific knowledge can be applied to a criminal investigation. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to apply their creativity and investigative skills working as a CSI with real crime scene equipment on several mock crime scenes.

Rock Climbing with Stoneworks! │ HALF DAY (9 AM - 12 PM)

This course is a great introduction to rock climbing. Participants will learn how to

belay, tie essential knots, and fit harnesses. Most importantly, the course will teach climbers how to perform safety checks on themselves and others. Climbing technique will also be learned, giving each person a platform to start from. As a special climax for this week, on Friday students will travel to French's Dome near Mt. Hood to experience a day of outdoor rock climbing! To insure the highest level of instruction, safety, and enjoyment, this workshop is limited to ten students.

ADAPT Training Fitness Camp: Stronger, Faster, Better │ HALF DAY (1 - 3:30 PM)

Whether you are a competitive athlete pushing fortop performance or just wanting

to get into better physical shape, this weeklong innovative program will help you develop significant improvement in your speed, endurance, and strength. Conducted both at FAIS and at the unique ADAPT fitness center, you will be physically challenged in new ways, gain self-confidence in your athletic abilities and have fun. Beyond this Summerfest 2013 experience, understanding the resources available through ADAPT will be a benefit to participants for years to come.

WEEK 3: July 29 - August 2

Rock Band: Jam, Perform, Record! │ FULL DAY

D uring this week long camp, students will work on writing, covering and practicing

songs of their choice in order to perform them live during an exclusive performance for friends and family in a real concert venue. The concert will also be recorded and students will get a copy of their performance. Eric John Kaiser will share his recording and touring experience as a professional musician to help students build a stage presence, work in/with/as a band or as a solo performer, and build self esteem through music creation, performance, and workshops. Musicians of all skill levels and styles are welcome.

Time Travel: Walking in Their Shoes │ FULL DAY

Explore people, events and issues that shaped our world. In this workshop history comes alive when we move outside the classroom to explore historical sites and living history museums, and talk with re-enactors and expert guides. In addition, we will recreate world changing events as we try a variety of historical games and simulations ranging from 19th century US sectional politics to World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. As we explore great moments in history and plan worldwide conquests, we will need to sustain ourselves by sampling favorites from local cuisine including Oven and Shaker pizza, some Portland food carts, and Voodoo donuts! 
*$45 fee to cover additional travel costs and entrance fees

Doodling, Drawing and Being a Boss! │ HALF DAY (9 AM - 12 PM)

A skilled artist makes the art of drawing look almost magical, but in fact drawing is a skill that can be developed through effective instruction and practice and is useful in many areas of life. In this workshop, students will receive instruction, effective technical tips, personalized guidance, encouragement, and time to develop this foundational art skill. We will cover such subject matter in drawing as contour drawing, light and value, figure and animal drawing, environmental art, and illustrative story telling! Discover how good you can be!

Shake It Up! The Art of Tribal Style Belly Dance │ HALF DAY (1 - 4 PM)

Tribal belly dance is an improvised and synchronized group dance that fuses the movements and aesthetics of traditional dances from many cultures. Students will learn a brief history of belly dance and its different styles, its foundational philosophies and vocabulary, and the basic moves of this enriching, beautiful dance. The improvisational aspect of tribal belly dance makes the learning process especially fun. By the end of the week, students will be prepared to confidently and masterfully display their new skills!

Students will participate in a series of day trips -- from tide pools in Cannon Beach and lunch at Mo's Chowderhouse, to kayaking on the Nehalem River and a hike up Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain... with a quick stop for ice cream at the Tillamook Cheese Factory! To mix it up mid-week, we'll head up the mountain for a fun-filled day at the Ski Bowl Adventure Park to enjoy everything from miniature golf to human hamster balls to alpine slides. All the while, your guide Genna will help you uncover clues and decode them along the way. Good luck!

Gilkey's Top Chef │ FULL DAY

Do you have the makings of a top chef? Come find out! Not only will we make lunch > for ourselves every day and bake delicious goodness, we will make dinner for you to pack and bring home to your family of four. Yes parents, come home to a prepared dinner!  Then, the challenge is on! After learning various cooking skills and styles, on Friday you will make your own signature dish and compete against your friends with a distinguished panel of food tasters to find out who rules and will become Gilkey's Top Chef.

Mask-erade Ball │ HALF DAY (9 AM - 12 PM)

Mask-making is an ancient tradition shared by many cultures. In this workshop

you will be designing and creating your own functional, wearable, decorative masks. Using a variety of materials, we will begin on simple half masks, and then move on to making full masks using live molds of each student's face. Maybe it will be scary. . . maybe it will be beautiful . . . or maybe it will just be plain old awesome. Create something magnificent in this week long mask-making workshop!

"Whose Line is it Anyway?" Performance and Improv! │ HALF DAY (1 - 4 PM)

Love to laugh? Enjoy performing? Then this is the class for you! It's a week of improv

games, spontaneous story telling, and performance. An assortment of props and costumes will help fuel the imagination and add to the fun. We'll be playing games as seen on the hit show "Whose Line is it Anyway?" as well as many others to sharpen your wit and make each other laugh.

Week 5: August 12 - 16

Handmade Bath and Beauty: The Spa Experience │ FULL DAY

Learn to create all natural beauty products for your friends and family! Join in a fun

week of pampering and spa treatments while working with locally sourced organic materials. Each student will create their own “home care kit,” which will include hand poured soy based candles made with essential oils, tinted lip balms, bath salts, shampoo and conditioner, and a variety of body lotions and face masks. Students will experiment with creating custom scents and colors of their choice, learn common homeopathic remedies and natural beauty alternatives, and be able to tailor their products to their own particular skin needs. In addition, we’ll be taking a couple of day trips including a trip to a local farmers' market for ingredients and a visit to a spa for inspiration.

Ahhh! Tournament │ HALF DAY (9 AM - 12 PM)

Ahhh! might possibly be the most fun tournament game ever, at least in the minds of the majority here at the Gilkey International Middle School. A more complicated form of kickball, Ahhh! utilizes six bases and requires the development of kicking, catching, and throwing skills. Ahhh! is a great way to be active and have fun with friends. Join us this summer for the ultimate Ahhh! tournament organized by master coach, Ron Thomas. Here at Gilkey we take our Ahhh! seriously . . . you will not want to miss this awesome event!

Dungeons and Dragons: Tabletop Heroes │ HALF DAY (9 AM - 12 PM)

Ever imagined going on an epic adventure? Ever thought about what it would be like

to wield a sword defending your closest friends? If so, then Dungeons and Dragons might just be for you. In this class you will be introduced to classic D&D 3.5: a tabletop role playing game where imagination and ingenuity are everything. Using the flexible rules of the game, you’ll design characters, form a party, go on adventures, and even learn how to be a Dungeon Master yourself, all without ever leaving your table! Whether you’re an actor, a story-teller, a puzzle solver, or just a dreamer, D&D has something for everyone.

colored glazes, students completely transform dull red quarry tiles into works of art. From individual tile designs to large multipiece compositions that grace table tops and mirror frames, our students learn to master the art of tile application, and create beautiful finished works of art. This week-long workshop format is optimal for encouraging students to try more complex designs and multiple projects. Be amazed!

Pop-Up Books and More! │ HALF DAY (9 AM - 12 PM)

Ever wondered how they made those pop up books that have fascinated you since you were little? Learn the tricks of the trade and make your own amazing pop-up book! There will be plenty of time to add text or illustrations and explore different types of bindings. We will also explore how to put together a sketch book with either a traditional or more modern binding. Lots of options in this class. Come join us this summer!

Learn how to keep useful class notes and how to reduce stress while taking important tests, refine your reading and listening skills, maximize your class and homework time, and learn how to promote good communication with your teachers. Offering the ADAPT workshops at the end of the summer provides an excellent opportunity for students to get back in shape for the fall sports season.

Competitive Speech & Debate │ HALF DAY (1 - 4 PM)

Interested in drama, performance art, slam poetry, or contemporary literature?  Or maybe you're interested in economics, political affairs, current events, or consider yourself a history buff? Come learn the basics of this challenging high school sport, with an event to fit every student's particular interest. Speech and Debate prepares students for public speaking, improves self-confidence, allows for personal creativity and expression, and provides an opportunity to formally recognize individual accomplishments. Instructor Genna Robertson-Hall is a two time OSAA State Champion in Poetry Interpretation, and has over four years experience performing competitively in poetry, dual and dramatic interpretation, and public policy debate.
