FAIS Summer Camp provides a wide variety of fun-filled and educational activities for children of all ages, including those who do not attend school at FAIS. Classes are taught by experienced and diverse instructors with an emphasis on cultural enrichment, creativity, and hands-on learning.

WEEK 1 ─ July 15 - 19

PS-PK │ Sun, Art, and the Outdoors

The colors, vibrancy, and fun of summer are captured in this truly hands-on camp. String a sun-catcher out of beads, make tissue-paper stained glass, create melted crayon art, and then venture outside for water play and obstacle courses. We will explore the FAIS Nature Trail for inspiration, and play games with our shadows. A camp that truly celebrates sun and summer! Camp led in French and English.

K-2nd │ Lego and Summer Sports

Challenge your problem-solving and basic construction skills through the wide world of LEGO. This fun-filled camp will give campers the opportunity to make their own creations, collaborate on elaborate builds within groups, and get involved in lots of other stimulating, Lego-related activities and games. Balancing the engineering, cerebral side of this fun camp will be reenergizing time spent outdoors playing field hockey, cricket, badminton, and more. Camp led in French and English.

K-2nd │ L’Histoire du Loup (The Wolf Stories)

Campers will be exposed to many aspects of theater while creating a play adapting one or more stories, where a wolf is the center character. Practice and improve your French while acting, directing, creating costumes, props, masks, and backgrounds. The week will culminate with a small show that showcases our campers’ new skills in theater! Camp led in French.

2nd-5th │ Fencing and Medieval Games

Get in touch with your inner musketeer! Spend your mornings improving or learning new fencing skills under the able direction of staff from NW Fencing Center of Portland. Fencing develops physical and technical skills, and also encourages quick thinking, creative problem-solving, and concentration. Spend your afternoons exploring ancient French and English games. Camp led in French.

3rd-5th │ Secrets of French Pastry

Beautiful French pastries are an art form, and you will find that anyone can master them if armed with the right techniques. Participants will learn how to break down recipes and execute them in a step-by-step fashion. Learn how to measure and weigh ingredients with precision using metric measurements. With their newfound knowledge and skills in French pastry, each student, with the instructor's help, will plan and create their own dessert to present at the end of the week. Class recipes include but are not limited to: éclairs, chocolate mousse cake and fruit tarts. Camp led in French.

WEEK 2 ─ July 22 - 26

PS-PK │ Summer Soundtrack - Music Discovery

We will explore, discover, learn, and create new and different sounds during this week of musical discovery. Learn new French songs through musical play, and build your own instruments to play along. Internalize rhythm through dance and movement, and investigate the properties of sound through exploration of common instruments such as the guitar, violin, trumpet, and piano. Campers will go home with a new repertoire of musical skills, games, songs and instruments—a soundtrack for their summer! Camp led in French and English.

K-1st │ Musical and Art Expression

Explore sound and the many different ways to produce it. Illustrate songs with stories and paintings to better understand the effects and influence of sound. Invent and illustrate your own stories while exploring the many facets of sound and the different ways to make it. Not your normal “music” camp, this week really brings a hands-on approach to the wonderful world of music, art, and expression. Camp led in French.

1st-4th │ Judo, Asian Cooking, and Crafts

This camp touches on all the senses: First, improve your balance and enhance your body and spirit through the discovery or improvement of your Judo skills. Then, learn to cook Asian treats both savory and sweet. Finally, learn traditional crafts such as calligraphy and basic characters, card-making, lanterns, windsocks, kites, and activities. Camp led in French and English.

2nd-5th │ LEGO Animation - Robots

Using a fresh cast of robotic characters, learn the art of animation using LEGO as a medium! Create your own movie from start to finish. Students will use iPads (provided by FAIS) to take animation photos, edit video/sound, and create unique music scores. Set, character, and story construction will be taught using concepts in math, physics, language arts and more! Camp led in English.

WEEK 3 ─ July 29 - August 2

PS-PK │ Bon Appetit, Monsieur Lapin!

Using Claude Boujon’s book “Bon Appetit! Monsieur Lapin” we will meet the different animals that Mr. Rabbit (Monsieur Lapin) meets on his journey and experience what they like to eat, all in French! We will cook Mr. Rabbit’s carrot soup, craft and paint each of the animals, and learn basic French phrases about cooking and eating. In addition, we will learn songs/games such as “Mon Petit Lapin” and “Saute, Saute, Saute” as well as Monsieur Lapin's very own song! Bon appetit tout le monde! Camp led in French and English.

K-1st │ Gyotaku and the Art of Printing from Nature

This camp will introduce participants to Gyotaku, a traditional form of Japanese fish printing from the mid-19th century. Campers will learn the history of this art form, which originally was used by fishermen to record their catches. In addition to learning to master this form of art, we will explore plant printing and create our own natural masterpieces to amaze our family and friends. Camp led in French.

1st-4th │ Hover Craft Model Design and Painting

This hands-on camp will give campers the opportunity to design and build a functional air-powered hover craft, a super car, and more. We provide all materials and your completed models are yours to keep. We will learn about the laws of motion, energy, lift, friction, speed, and acceleration. No model is the same and with the help of our instructor and your creativity, you will amaze yourself with what you can create. Spend the afternoons drawing and painting with our resident artist Evan. Camp led in English and French.

2nd-5th │ International Music, Movement, Props, Sound, and Songwriting

Discover movement, be inspired by the many shapes and forms of musical creation, and do it all within an international context. Learn body percussion routine and movement through the structure of a musical piece, and discover unlimited ways to tell a short story through music. Learn and interpret folktales in addition to creating your own songs. Camp led in French.

WEEK 4 ─ August 5 - 9

PS-PK │ A Week of Comptines (Nursery Rhymes) and Cooperative Games

Learn and practice classic French nursery rhymes in this fun week of discovery. We will make hand puppets, and create murals, costumes, and books to go along with our comptines. Interspersed throughout the week will be trips to the school gym, for cooperative games that will build confidence and develop problem-solving and motor skills. Make way for days full of play, music, movement, and creation! Camp led in French and English.

K │ The Musical Architect

Using wooden blocks to symbolize musical elements, we will build “musical towers” which range from simple to sophisticated. The musical “blocks” will include French songs, rhythm, percussion, musical theory, and movement activities. We will also explore cultural and ethnic music. Practice your French and learn new words, rhythm, and expression in this fun camp designed for the truly musical kindergartener. Camp led in French.

K-2nd │ Weaving, Sewing, and Crafts

Campers will have fun learning to weave and sew while developing creativity, fine-motor skills, problem-solving, and concentration. The days will include fun projects to take home and creative, crafty skills participants will use for life. Concepts and projects based and enriched by Sylvie’s African roots and knowledge. Camp led in French.

1st-4th │ Wizards and Sorcerers Week

Join in the escapades of Harry Potter and his friends during a week of hands-on fun. You will play Quidditch, make an edible wand, brew fantastic potions to drink and much more. Create and watch amazing chemical reactions, make crystals, watch a mirage appear—you won’t believe what you’ll do at this camp! Come along with Harry, Ron, and Hermoine where the magic of science, art and literature meet, and let your imagination soar! Camp led in English and French.

2nd-5th │ Mixed Media Arts Week

Let the artist in you shine! Each day will focus on a different style and medium in the production of your very own masterpieces. Take advantage of the weather and be inspired by painting outdoors with spray paint. Discover and create using charcoal, pencil, watercolor, and oil paints. Develop and enhance your existing abilities while acquiring new techniques and enhanced creative awareness. Class led in French and English.

PS-PK │ Discover Maternelle

This camp introduces its lucky participants to all things FAIS. This camp is focused on the discovery of French, FAIS facilities, staff, classmates, and classroom habits (and of course, fun and new friends). You will familiarize yourself with French and what a normal week of school might be like through fun activities and projects to take home. Camp led in French and English.

PK-K │ Reprenons Nos Habitudes

This camp for prekindergarten and kindergarten campers lays the foundation for a successful year ahead at FAIS. Through fun activities and projects to take home, participants will reinforce their French skills and get back into the school routine in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Camp led in French.

K │ Kinder Cooks

 

 

Let your child discover his/her inner chef with this hands-on cooking and baking class. This class lets kids play with their food with recipes like stuffed zucchini or healthy cereal bars. They will see the importance of preparing and organizing step by step, and the magical transformations from mere ingredients to something delicious! Children will also work on making recipe books, to take home at the end of the week.

K-1st │ Swimming and Make It/Take It Home

Cool down at the pool while learning to swim. Certified swimming instructors will help you discover and improve your swimming skills (two lessons and water games per session, five days a week) at Children of the Sea Swim School. Spend the rest of the day out of the pool, building and crafting an array of projects to take home. Camp led in English and French.

1st-3rd │ Puppet Making

Experiment with the different aspects of puppet making and shows. You will write a scenario, design the storyboard and create your characters from scratch. We will make team puppets, individual builds, and work together to create a puppet show.Camp led in French.

2nd-5th │ A Continental Discovery Through Art, Craft, and Storytelling.

 

 Join us on a world wide journey to five continents, whose cultures we’ll experience through art, craft, music, storytelling, food, and more. We will visit a new continent each day, exploring its wonders. Share your own culture and discover others in this fun, hands-on camp. Camp led in French and English.

1st-5th │ British Multi Sports

Motivate, activate, and energize your summer with Challenger’s team of British coaches. You will learn new British sports such as tag rugby, cricket, rounders, net ball. and more. More than just kicking, catching, and jumping, you will learn sportsmanship and leadership all while having fun, playing hard, and making new friends. Groups will be divided by age. K │ Welcome To Kindergarten

This camp is designed to introduce new and returning FAIS students to the wonderful world of kindergarten. Activities, projects and lessons will closely follow what is done during a regular week of kindergarten at FAIS. Returning students will be able to get back into the habit of speaking French during the day, and new students will have additional introductory lessons in French. Connect with your old friends and meet some new ones in this fun and relaxing atmosphere. Camp led in French.

1st-3rd │ Soccer Boot Camp

Get a leg up on the competition! This camp is a full-day (half-day for 1st graders) boot camp filled with fun and challenging drills to improve your technical and tactical soccer skills. Each day’s activities will be adjusted to better suit the players’ physical capacities. Camp led in French and English.

1st-4th │ Improv and Performance

Use your body, voice, and imagination to create new stories ... all in French! Through games and improvisation, campers will be introduced to acting techniques. They will use stories, texts, and tales to create a unique show performed at the end of the week. From props and costumes to lines and characters, we’ll make the magic of theater come true. 3rd-5th │ Wreck-it Week

Smash! Crash! BOOM! Form “wrecking companies” with your campmates and compete in various engineering-related challenges, such as building a bridge from balsawood, and constructing safety mechanisms to protect a raw egg from impact. We will explore four fields of engineering: mechanical, civil, aerospace, and industrial as they design and construct a variety of projects that will then be used in a wrecking scenario. Put on your hard hats and safety goggles and join the fun! Camp led in English.
