Little Sounds Explorers: Grades PS-K (French) CLASS FULL REGISTRATION CLOSED

Explore sound and the different ways to produce it. We will illustrate songs with stories and paintings in order to help understand the effects of sound. We will invent our own stories and illustrate them. This class will encourage students to make music daily with sounds such as those made with your fingers, mouth, hands, and even everyday objects.

Young Rembrandts: Grades K-2 (English)

Session I: January 30-March 19

Students will learn about basic design and composition as they draw their own dollar bill. If your child is fond of sports, he or she will enjoy drawing illustrations featuring a trophy showcase and soccer player. Good color selection and proper coloring technique will be emphasized in many of our lessons, including in the optical illusion lesson. Besides strengthening your child’s drawing and coloring skills, they will also learn about art history as we present lessons featuring master artists Gilbert Stuart and Picasso.

Session II: April 2-May 21

In this session the Young Rembrandts classroom comes alive with cartooning! Students will complete multiple drawings in each class, tied together by a common theme or a story. These cartooning classes focus on creativity and movement.

Tuesday Classes

Art pour les Petits: Grades PS-K (French) CLASS FULL │ REGISTRATION CLOSED

Students will use different art techniques (including charcoal, acrylic, ink, and more) to create quality art projects. Projects may take the form of portraits, landscapes, and modern art. This class will also introduce various world artists.

Fairytale Music: Grades K-3 (French)

Using the large scale of sounds, syllables, and words of the French Language, we will create songs inspired by fairytales and learn different styles of music from around the world. Students will explore the world of improvisation through games, music, hand held percussion, dance and songs while developing their sense of music.

Hop, Sing, and Imagine: Grades PS-PK (French) │ CLASS CANCELED

Have fun with games and activities that incorporate movement, song, stories and lots of imagination. Your child will enter a world of play, but will also unwind after a day of school. Examples of activities include animal charades, relays, as well as relaxation techniques.

About the instructor: Sue Inahara has had extensive experience working with small children at FAIS, and is currently an assistant at the preschool level.

Wednesday Classes

Build and Design with LEGO®: Grades K-1 (French)

In this class students begin by building projects and then work in teams to program their Lego creations and bring them to action! They will use their imagination and math concepts to work on challenges, and to design their own projects! The LEGO® Education WeDo™ Robotics Construction is easy to use and is a great opportunity to introduce young students to robotics.  Students will learn how to create and program a model featuring working motors and sensors, use software media to acquire information, and use feedback to adjust a programming system output.

This class will serve both as an introduction for new players, and as a place where more experienced players can improve. Students will be paired with other students at their skill level.

Les Petits Comédiens: Grades PS-K (French) CLASS FULL │ REGISTRATION CLOSED

This class is an introduction to creative dramatics. Through games and improvisation students will explore new worlds by imagining situations and creating stories using their voice, body, and fantasy. This class helps develop imagination, self confidence as well as language and social skills.

About the Instructor: Jane Fabulet Roberts is a co-founder of Fabulations, a French language theatre company (link www.fabulations.org ). Jane attended the Jacques Lecoq International School of Theatre in Paris. She has had a multi-faceted live theater career in France including performing, directing and acting as manager. She has been teaching theater for over 15 years and mixes her experience as a teacher of French as a Second Language and Theatre.

Thursday Classes

African Dance: Grades K-3 (French)

African dance is a powerful dance where the body expresses a lot of feelings and emotions. Not only a performing art, this style of dance taught social patterns and values. It has helped people work, mature, praise or criticize members of the community while celebrating festivals and funerals, competing, and reciting history and poetry. In this class we will learn African dance movements and choreography. We will also work with drums and rhythm. The last class will feature a performance, complete with costumes, for the FAIS community.

Students will have fun cooking, and eating! We will start with learning basic, healthy cooking skills with age appropriate recipes. There will also be an opportunity for playtime while food (or dessert!) is cooking.

Strategy Games: Grades PS-K (French)

Offered by our longtime chess instructor, this class will introduce young students to basic strategy games, such as Checkers, Battleship, Othello, and Blockus. We’ll learn how to navigate a board and build basic strategies.

Friday Classes

Acrobits: Grades PK-K (English) │ CLASS FULL │ REGISTRATION CLOSED

Acrobits is an introduction to gymnastics and aerial movement. Students learn basic skills such as forward rolls, backward rolls, handstand and cartwheel progressions, as well as body positions, terminology, and safety rules for each apparatus. Each class focuses on the fundamental floor skills and muscle development necessary for aerial movement, and time is dedicated at the end of each class for an introduction to aerial apparatuses.

About the Instructor: Libbi Houghton joined Pendulum Aerial Arts in 2009, but has been a gymnast, dancer, and martial artist for most of her life. She has been coaching all levels of gymnastics, from parent-child classes to competitive teams for five years. Libbi has her Gymnastics Safety Certification, and coaching certifications through USAG.

Yoga: Grades PS-K (English)

Join us for fun, creative and dynamic yoga classes for kids! Games, music, creative movement, guided stretches and storytelling blend to stimulate imagination and encourage self-expression and body awareness.

About the Instructor: Allyson Copacino is a certified yoga teacher through the Yoga Alliance, and has practiced Ashtanga Yoga since 1999. In 2005 she received her Master’s in Early Childhood/Elementary education and has since then taught in Portland Public schools. Combining her passions for yoga and education, Allyson became a certified children’s yoga instructor in 2006 and started Move Yoga (www.moveyogastudio.com) a program that brings yoga to schools throughout the Portland area. Allyson’s goal is to share the gift of yoga with people of all ages, encouraging students to find their own yoga practice authentic to their needs.
