Arts Week

Arts Week is a special program that takes place each October and February for the students of the Gilkey International  Middle School. It is designed to provide outstanding experiences for our students in the visual arts.

Register for Spring 2013 Arts Week here!

During the last week in October and February, students can elect to take one or up to five days of special workshops created just for our students. Each workshop uses the time frame of a usual class day so students are given over six hours to explore and create in a variety of areas.

Glazed Tile Design

Glazed Tiles.jpg

Glazed tile is a great media for middle school students. Applying bright colored glazes to ceramic tile allows students to create very successful projects. Students can select from a wide range of subject matter as design sources for their art work from realistic to abstract. Finished tile projects will be adhered to a board, making them suitable for framing.

The Glazed Tile Design workshop is a perennial favorite with our students. To accommodate the number of those interested, we will be offering Glazed Tile Design Monday through Friday during Arts Week. Students can choose to take this workshop one or up to three days. Participating in additional days allows students to finish several projects, work on a larger scale, or complete the multi-piece tile table or custom mirror frame.

The glazed tile custom tables and mirror frames are wonderful options for students during Arts Week. We have discovered a table that is a perfect complement to our students' beautiful tile projects. In addition to the table option, students can elect to create a sixteen tile project that will be placed in the border of a wood mirror frame. These options are available each of the days Glazed Tile Design is offered but usually require more than one day to complete

Wings and Waves Field Trip

We are excited to offer Arts Week students an opportunity to explore the Evergreen

Students can elect to participate in all or select favorite activities from the following choices: Aviation Museum, Space Museum, movie in the theater, and/or Wings and Waves Water Park. The full day option includes seeing both museums, a movie and the water park.  Students electing to go to the water park only, can attend a Monday Arts Week workshop on campus for the morning, and then go to the water park for the afternoon. Carpools will be returning to campus between 6:00 and 7:00 PM on Monday, February 25. If you have questions or would like to serve as a driver for this field trip (contributing toward your Volunteer Hours), please email Denise Lundblade at dlundblade@faispdx.org.; Thank you.

With displays ranging from the elegant aeronautic designs of two unknown bike mechanics – Orville and Wilbur Wright – to an actual Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird that can fly at speeds of over 2,000 miles per hour – the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum has something for everyone. To further enhance our students' learning experience at this facility, we are encouraging parents and friends of the FAIS community who have experience as pilots or flight engineers, to serve as guides during this day dedicated to flight.  If you have a flight or engineering background and could be free on Monday, February 25 to serve as a guide, please email Denise Lundblade at dlundblade@faispdx.org.  Thank you.

Evergreen Wings & Waves Waterpark

Evergreen Wings & Waves is an educational waterpark that includes ten waterslides, a wave pool and a children’s museum dedicated to teaching students about the power of water. Consisting of classic Evergreen Museum building design, this water playground features nearly 70,000 square feet of educational fun with over 80 features, including dozens of interactive spray jets and water guns, plus four waterslides, a net climb and bridges, topped by a massive Evergreen International Aviation B747-100 aircraft on the top of the building. A great experience for all!
